Report on Zaiwa New Testament Dedication

The dedication was held in Yangon on April 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Everyone who arrived from Thailand brought in copies of the NT. So we had 81 copies of the NT for the dedication.

On April 24 we had planned to meet with the Zaiwa translation committee and advisory committee at the Kachin church, but LB came at about 4:30 and told us that the Karen building next to the Kachin church could not have us since we were foreigners (too sensitive) so Mark decided to just go and meet with them. In the meantime the Zaiwa called and said that had arranged for us all to go over a fence at the back of the building to arrive unseen, but that would not work with 4 members of our group around 80 years old. So LaBawk and I went to his hotel and when we got there they were rearranging a room to meet with everyone. They had gotten permission to use the hotel to meet with us. When I walked in they had a camera crew and lighting. LaBawk went to pick up the guests show the van how to get there. In the meantime I talked to the committee about doing the OT and an expanded literacy program. They thanked Ola Hanson for the Kachin they had used, but now have their own. Thanked SIL and Mark. They wanted to form a new committee and continue on. I told them we may need to wait two years for the OT to start with SIL help and that they could submit small literacy projects if teachers were available, but we should wait for Ban Roi to return to expand the literacy program. Afterwards I asked Zau Mo why he did not say anything and he said this was not his plan. After this, everyone arrived and everyone introduced themselves and shook hands and we gave a bit of background for each. The committee members thanked everyone for their parts in the project and encouraged us to help them with the OT. One man said "The NT is like a shirt that we wear, but we need pants also. The OT is the pants. Please help us have a complete outfit. We need to be fully dressed. " They gave me a black manau outfit to wear at the dedication from a Zaiwa man who had to return to China.

- The Zaiwa will do a dedication at the KBC convention in March 2010 in Bhamo. The Zaiwa in China will do a dedication in Mangshi this summer with some people coming and taking boxes of NTs for distribution.

Saturday, April 25

- Mark went to the Kachin Church at 9 a.m. (Zau Mo had told Mark to come at 9 and everyone else to come at 10. He had put 9 a.m. on the invitation and said people would trickle in, so better for the foreigners to come at 10.) There were already about 50 people there and by 9:15 most everyone was there, so Mark had to call Summit Parkview and try to get everyone there as soon as possible – they arrived around 9:50. In the meantime Mark met people, set up the slide show with the nice set up they had, talked to KD TuLum who was the head pastor, and went over the agenda with everyone.

- The dedication started around 10 after all the guests were seated. There were about 120 people, but only about 20 Zaiwa. Much of the service was in Jinghpaw since Zau Mo wanted all the Kachin guests to understand. There was a pastor who led the service. The agenda was:

o opening prayer

o Scripture reading

o Welcome

o Zaiwa song about the lost book that they now had again (Zaiwa Chyumdang Laika – The legend of the book)

o introduction

o Zaiwa choir

o Zau Mo spoke and thanked people and reviewed project

o Mark spoke in Zaiwa and gave summary in English (Thanks and project history). Zaiwa read Romans 10:17, Col. 3:16, 2 Timothy 3:16-17, 1 Thess 1:5)

o Zaiwa choir

o David Smith spoke and gave greetings from the church and Zau Bawk translated

o Steve Lovellette spoke and gave greetings from the church and Zau Bawk translated

o Jack Fitzwilliam spoke about his parents work with the Zaiwa in the 1930s and La Bawk translated

o Slide show with pictures from the project and Zaiwa music sung by Ban Roi on tape.

o Presentation of scripture – Mark spoke in Zaiwa and then English "May God's word be a lamp for your feet and a light for your path. May God bless the Zaiwa people as they seek truth. God's word is truth. From this time forward may the Zaiwa people use God's word in their own language to know God better and receive God's blessing".

o KD TuLum gave a sermon in Kachin and English (his mother was Zaiwa)

o the group presented gifts of a silver sword to Mark, a jade piece of jewelry to Leslie, Kachin bags to Anna and Nate, Jade crosses to David, Steve, Dan and Jack, bag to Jim and Steve F, cross-stitched pictures thanking the three churches, bracelets to Alice and Radona. They gave gifts to Dreschers, Helga, Gillian, Khoi and Saw Mar Gay Gyi (who was not there).

o Lunch with plenty of group pictures and good-byes. The Bibles were taken to lunch and about 30 were sold. All Zaiwa bought one for 2000 kyat and some Kachin bought them. The rest were taken to Myitkyina.
